Neppure un fiore è in boccio;
appena un po’ di verde gelato
ammicca nel manto argenteo della neve.
Soltanto la mia finestra è piena
dei fiorellini rossi e bianchi
che spuntano dal giaccio.

E, ahimè, nessun canto d’uccello
echeggia con nota gioiosa,
ma solo il gorgheggio smorzato
di piccole cinciallegre
che frullano al davanzale
implorando cibo.

Il canto nuziale tace nella macchia
dove gli uccellini,
appena poco fa, nell’ombra verdeggiante
avevano i loro nidi.
Il cantico d’amore fugge dalla fratta
e si concentra dentro la mia stanza.

Freddo gennaio,
io qui a dire il vero,
intento ai giochi di Venere,
non sentirò il tuo gelo.
Puoi durare per sempre, se vuoi,
freddo gennaio!

A winter song by Leone Sinigaglia, Italian composer from the turn of the 19th century into the 20th; the poem on which the music is based is by Ludwig Christoph Heinrich Hölty and was set to music by many other composers in the 18th and 19th century, among the others Franz Schubert.
Sinigaglia, who lived some years in Wien and Prag learning from Brahms and Dvořák, died of a heart attack in his hometown, Turin, during a nazist arrest in 1944, being Jewish.

Here's the translation of the poem (Sinigaglia omitted the last stanza):

  No flowers bloom;
Only the wintergreen
Peeps through a silvery cloak;
Only the windows are filled
With flowers red and white,
That have burgeoned from the frost.

   Ah, no birdsong
Sounds with a joyful tone;
Only the winter lay
Of that little chickadee
That flutters at the window
And coos for food.

   Love flees the grove
Where the little birds
In the green shadows
Had their nests in former days;
Love flees the grove
And comes indoors.

   Cold January,
Here under the play of love
I shall truly not feel
Your frost!
Last forever,
Cold January!
