Brano sacro a 4 voci in tre strofe, del baritono e compositore modenese Giovanni Battista Gordigiani, fratello maggiore del più noto Luigi. 
Giovanni Battista, diplomato a Milano e per breve tempo baritono in teatro a Firenze e Pisa, passò buona parte della sua vita, quasi 50 anni, a Parigi, come insegnante di conservatorio, mentre il fratello Luigi, famoso per i suoi arrangiamenti e raccolte di stornelli toscani, viaggiava come concertista tra Firenze, protetto del conte Demidoff, Parigi e Londra. Tra l'altro proprio a Parigi ebbe un notevole successo a teatro una sua opera sacra dal titolo molto simile al brano di Giovanni Battista che qui proponiamo: O Sanctissima Vergine Maria.

A 4-voices hymn to the Virgin by the Romantic baryton and composer Giovanni Battista Gordigiani, known for having been a teacher in Paris music conservatory for almost 50 years and for being brother to the younger composer and pianist Luigi, "the Italian Schubert", who gathered so many Tuscan and Italian songs from the 19th century. 
They almost share this text, too, because Luigi traveled much more than Giovanni Battista, but also composed an "O Sanctissima Vergine Maria" which was a big hit in Paris theatres in 1853.
