Un inno a 4 voci (nella stampa che si conserva presso l'Archivio di Santa Maria del Fiore se ne conserva una quinta come canto secondo, ma coincide musicalmente col canto primo) a San Giovanni Battista, patrono di Firenze, composto da Giovanni Battista da Gagliano, fratello minore di Marco da Gagliano, che fu musicista (insegnante, compositore e apprezzato tiorbista) presso la corte medicea, in S.Lorenzo e in S.Maria del Fiore.
Inizialmente erroneamente attribuito a Pietro Sanmartini in quanto una voce di QUintus (in realtà identica al tenore si trova manoscritta in una raccolta che comprende diversi brani del Sanmartini.
Il testo potrebbe essere dello stesso G.B. da Gagliano, non se ne trovano altre tracce tra i compositori, nei graduali, innari o sequenziari del tempo.

A hymn by Giovanni Battista da Gagliano, Marco da Gagliano's younger brother, who was musician at Medici's court, in the Florentine Cathedral  and S.Lorenzo's Basilica.
This hymn was initially misascribed to Pietro Sanmartini: in fact a "quintus" part (actually the tenor part) was found in a separate manuscript together with other Sanmartini's works (of which only the quintus part unfortunately survived).
The hymn celebrates St.John the Baptist, patron saint of Florence, with a text probably by the same GB Gagliano, approximately going like that: 
O world, glorify the herald, the lover of the woods, who announced the new law.
He was taken from his mother's womb, his father had his own mouth opened to speak and he was to be honoured by the Virgin Mary.
He would hide in a small cave, he would eat only honey and locusts, given as presents by Heaven.
He was covered with the skin of animals, but his saint forefinger was to uncover the Son of Eternal God.
